Get to know Hospitalist Dr. Sandy Akrawe, who serves patients in Escondido, California.

A prominent hospitalist, Dr. Akrawe is affiliated with Benchmark Hospitalists & Intensivists, serving patients at Palomar Medical Center Escondido in California.

Benchmark Hospitalists and Intensivists is dedicated to serving the health needs of the community. Their mission is to maintain their leadership as a leading hospitalist and intensivist group by putting the patient and community first in everything they do. Ever since she was a child, Dr. Akrawe has always had a passion for helping others. When she saw that her love for art, science, and interacting with others could be combined in medicine, she decided to become a doctor. Her favorite part of being a doctor is being able to provide a safe space, medical care, and mental support for her patients and their loved ones. She also enjoys being able to work hand in hand with her colleagues and the hospital staff as a team, and admires the respect, love, and compassion they have for one another.

A native of Iraq, she graduated with her medical degree from the Baghdad University Al-Kindy College of Medicine. After relocating to the United States, she completed her residency in internal medicine at the Wayne State University / Detroit Medical Center.

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of internal or family medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. The primary focus is caring for hospitalized patients and co-management with other specialties. Hospitalists take an active part in medical care and ensure a safe discharge for the patients they take care of. They are being increasingly involved in administrative roles, given their expertise and collaboration with various teams in the hospital.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Akrawe is one of six children, and her family is known as the life of the party. She says that they are always the first to get on a dance floor and the last to leave it. Her hobbies include meditation, painting, interior design, and reading on topics such as quantum physics, the subconscious mind, psychology, spirituality, and self-development.
