Is a bone graft for a dental implant painful?
Every patient is different, but most patients at our practice report mild to mod pain after bone grafting. usually grafting is done in conjunction with Extractions. Most of the pain and swelling is related to the extraction (Not the bone graft) As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
Can a dental implant with bone loss be saved?
Great Question. Sorry to hear about problems with your implant. You need a 3D CBCT to assess the severity of bone loss and a thorough examination. In general, some cases are salvageable if the implant is still secured in the remaining bone and we can even try to build some bone around the failing implants. Varies a lot from case to case. I would recommend seeing a Board certified Oral Surgeon with excellent experience to see what are your options. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
Do you use my own bone for a bone graft?
Great question. Yes, your own bone can be used, but it is rarely done as it needs a second surgical site and increases cost. Typically for bone grafting, we have a few options: 1. Donor human cadaver bone (aka Allograft) - this is "Bone from a Bottle". This is the most commonly used option and depending on the type of bone, can have great results. 2. Synthetic Bone grafts - Typically an option if the pt prefers not use a donor bone graft (May be less efficacious than Allograft) 3. Your own bone (Autograft), works great, but needs a second surgical site and increase costs and risks from a second surgical site. Allograft is most often used bone graft. At Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we only Use Puros (The world's gold standard for Bone grafting for many decades) As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. When can I drink hot drinks after a gum graft?
Typically we recommend waiting at least a week after gum graft surgery to start hot drinks. We will typically evaluate a patient for post op visit, 1 week after the procedure and advise if there are further food restrictions. hope that helps! As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
How long is surgery for 2 dental implants?
Great question! If there is good jaw bone, the procedure under local anesthesia is around 20-30 mins for 2 implants. If under sedation, there is additional time needed to recover from IV sedation/anesthesia. Of course, at Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental implants, we always perform a thorough History, exam and 3D scan for all implant patients to ensure the highest safety and accuracy for all treatments. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
How painful is gum graft surgery?
There are multiple types of gum graft surgeries. Typically for the surgeries that require harvesting of gum graft from the roof of the mouth (palate), the harvest site is always quite sore. For most patients the recipient site may be sore for few days to few weeks. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. How long after the bone graft can I eat normally?
Every patient is different. In general for a single tooth, most patients are comfortable eating soft foods for the 1st few days. You can slowly progress to regular foods typically with 1-2 weeks. The period may be longer for multiple teeth and / or difficult extractions. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
How long does the swelling last after jaw cyst surgery?
In general, for most jaw procedures, the swelling will typically increase for the first 2-3 days, and reduce there after. Typically it takes 5-7 days for most of the swelling to dissipate. Depending on the nature of the procedure, the swelling may sometimes last much longer. Icing helps a lot for the 1st 48 hours, along with elevation of head with extra pillows while sleeping. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
Can 60 years old get a dental implant?
In general, Yes! The eligibility for dental implants are usually assessed during a consultation with an exam and an Xray (3D CBCT as necessary). If there is good bone quality and quantity and no contraindications due to prior health history/ medication usage/smoking etc, most patients are good candidates for implants, regardless of age. All the best! As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Can I fly 4 days after implant surgery?
Typically for any minor surgery, it is safe for patients to fly after 72 hours. In case the surgery involved the sinus, you may need to avoid flying for 2-4 weeks (needs to be assessed on a case to case basis). Regardless, we advise patients to carry the pain meds, Antibiotics, gauze, etc during any form of travel, especially for long distance flights or overseas flights. As always these are general guidelines and we do recommend speaking with your doctor regarding your particular situation. Thanks! Dr. Prakhar Mehrotra Ridge Oral Surgery & Dental Implants READ MORE
