Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Yasser El-Gazzar, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.
A fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. El-Gazzar works with patients at his private practice – New Edge Orthopedics – with offices in Jersey City and Springfield, New Jersey. His specialty interests include orthopedic adult and pediatric sports medicine and joint preservation surgery, as well as trauma and general orthopedics.

“I believe that joint preservation is the future of orthopedic surgery. I have undergone 7 major surgeries in my lifetime, the last surgery being in 2011. Each surgery was accompanied by fear and anxiety, followed by intense pain and rehab. I believe that understanding this process first hand has given me the advantage and ability to communicate with patients and help them truly understand the diagnosis, treatment options, and most importantly, the road to rehabilitation and returning to everyday life. I have had many negative experiences with surgeons who did not explain things to me, were short and abrupt with me, and made me feel that they really didn’t care. My life’s and professional career’s mission is to never make a patient feel the way I did” expressed the doctor.

Throughout his academic career, he completed his undergraduate education at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and earned his medical degree at the Drexel University College of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Albert Einstein Medical College/ Montefiore Medical Center, and his fellowship in sports medicine at the prestigious Jack Hughston Foundation in Georgia under the mentorship of Dr. Champ Baker, Jr. where he was involved in the care of NCAA, professional, high school, and “weekend warrior” athletes.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Among his various accolades, Dr. El-Gazzar has been the recipient of the ThreeBestRated Award, Best Poster Presentation, 3rd place by the Southern Orthopedic Association (2013), Jack Hughston Award for Outstanding Fellow Research by the Hughston Foundation (2012), and Russell Hibbs Award for Best Clinical Paper by the Scoliosis Research Society (2006).

Speaking several languages, he is fluent in English, Spanish, and Arabic.
