A well-versed anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist, Dr. Wempe is the Founder of Michael J Wempe MD SC in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

Having been in practice since 1985, he is also affiliated with UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central, UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Pueblo Surgery Center, Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, and Parkview Medical Center.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Wempe obtained his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1982. Three years later, in 1985, he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Possessing over four decades of experience, the doctor is board-certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. 

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Wempe is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Colorado Medical Society, as well as the El Paso and Pueblo County Medical Societies.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.

Interventional pain medicine utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, in which a team of health care professionals works together, to provide a full range of treatments and services for patients suffering from chronic and/or acute pain. Rather than just prescribing medication or only recommending physical therapy, an interventional pain management specialist utilizes all sources of treatment to eliminate pain in the fastest and most effective way possible for each individual patient.
