  • Can acid reflux be cured?

What a great question and thank you for asking! Some acid reflux can be cured. Generally during the reflux means identifying the triggers and foods that worsen reflux. Making sure you have sufficient time for food to go down your food pipe and not sleeping directly after eating or laying down, staying away from acidic, spicy or other caustic foods can help. Taking an antacid correctly can help. Generally, at 10 take some time to identify causes and limit symptoms. When in doubt, you can always speak to a nutritionist or dietitian, or integrative or functional medicine physician, and start with an elimination diet and some postural or behavioral changes to help limit reflux. Medication‘s may be indicated, and some testing may be indicated along with food allergy, testing and testing for a bacteria that may be living in the stomach. Occasionally stool testing is also helpful. And worst case scenarios or in progressive disease sometimes getting an endoscopy or a camera down your throat looking into esophagus, and your stomach can also be helpful. The goal is to prevent further acid from entering into your esophagus, causing potential cellular changes, including cancer. The recommended diet is called a "BRAT diet", and generally consists of Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. This diet is helpful for anyone who has nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
