Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Jonathan Palma, who serves patients in Florida as part of Pediatrix Medical Group.

An experienced neonatologist and clinical informaticist, Dr. Palma works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, ranked by US News & World Report as the top NICU in the state of Florida.

Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies is a nationally ranked, 285-bed non-profit, women and babies hospital located in Orlando, Florida. It is a part of the Orlando Health system, and is affiliated with the Florida State University College of Medicine’s Orlando campus.

After attending Davidson College, Dr. Palma graduated cum laude from the University of Florida College of Medicine where he was a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed residency in pediatrics and fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Stanford Health Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. During fellowship, he also completed a Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics at Stanford. He was on the faculty at Stanford through 2020 where he had a dual role in neonatology and clinical informatics and achieved the rank of Clinical Professor of Pediatrics.

Successful in his field, Dr. Palma is triple board-certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), and in clinical informatics by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).

He is a member of several professional organizations and committees, including the Epic Neonatology Steering Board (for which he served as chair from 2019-2021); the AAP Council on Clinical Information Technology (COCIT) since 2015; Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA); Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP); and Perinatal Section Member since 2005. He has also served on several medical advisory boards, and was most recently appointed to the Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board of LactaLogics, a company focused on providing human milk-based nutrition to at-risk infants.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery. In particular, Dr. Palma specializes in the coordination of perinatal care for complex pregnancies, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is heart-lung bypass for infants with severe respiratory and/or cardiac problems.

Growing up in Maitland, Dr. Palma followed in his parents footsteps (his father was a neonatologist at Orlando Health for over 30 years, and his mother was a NICU nurse). He returned home to the Orlando area with his family to be closer to his parents and brothers, and joined the group at Winnie Palmer to serve the babies and families of Central Florida.
