  • What type of anesthesia is used for liver resection?

You will need general anesthesia. You will go all the way off to sleep and have a breathing tube placed. You will also need central line(s) placed into your neck to be able to give you large volume blood/fluids as needed throughout the surgery and to transduce your central venous pressure for the doctors to see continuously throughout the surgery. I hope this helps. READ MORE

  • What type of anesthesia is used for colectomy?

A colectomy requires general anesthesia with a breathing tube (totally asleep throughout the case). This is because this is a major abdominal surgery that necessitates precise surgical acumen and no room for movement at all (esp. if it is a laparoscopic surgery [ie video in your belly] with sharp tools inside your abdomen. Your anesthesiologist may also offer you a thoracic epidural which can be placed before the surgery and provides excellent opioid-sparing, post operative pain relief. Hope this helps. READ MORE
