About

Dr. Matthew Burns is a Dentist practicing in Joliet, IL. I’m a general dentist with a specific interest in taking fantastic care of you and your teeth. I’m a family man and an Air Force reservist. There is no substitute for caring. It's what matters in marriage, parenthood, and profession. It's why I spent a year in a dental residency after graduating from dental school. It's why I have spent hundreds of hours on continuing education. And it's why I love being a dentist: because I care about my patients - their joys, their stories, their lives. Fixing teeth is just the icing on the cake.

Its always been about the people.

  • How can I clean my teeth after implants?

Ideally, brush twice daily with an electric toothbrush, then use a Waterpik or other water flosser to clean all your teeth, with extra time spent on the gums around the implant. Daily cleaning around the gums of the implant is critical for long-term success. READ MORE

  • How long will I have pain after zirconia crown placement?

Sometimes it takes a few weeks for a patient to acclimate to a new crown; this kind of pain is usually mild. Occasionally, a tooth may have a nerve that was in a fragile state before the crown was completed--either because of a crack or a deep cavity. (Usually this is the reason why a crown was completed in the first place!) But due to a fragile nerve, the nerve can sometimes die off from that stress and require a root canal, even after the crown is finished. This kind of pain would usually be severe and throbbing, not mild discomfort. READ MORE

  • Do zirconia crowns wear down?

Zirconia is a very durable material, very unlikely to wear down. Severe grinders May crack their crown if it is made very thin, but again, that is unlikely. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to start seeing results from Invisalign treatment?

Usually most patients start seeing results between 4-8 weeksthey will notice the teeth start to align. READ MORE

  • Can I rinse with saltwater after a root canal?

Absolutely! The salt water is most effective at healing gum tissue, which usually is a little sore after a root canal. READ MORE

  • How many years do partials last?

That's a great question! For some patients, partials can last decades. I had an elderly gentleman once whose upper partial had lasted 50 years! The real determining factor is how stable the teeth are that hold the partial in place. If a partial is anchored on four teeth that end up getting cavities, crowns, or are extracted--that makes it very difficult to keep the same partial. So if the surrounding teeth stay healthy, and the patient doesn't damage their partial by dropping it--then a partial could easily last decades. READ MORE
