Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Taras Benzar, who serves patients throughout the State of California.

An established hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Benzar is affiliated with The Oncology Institute of Hope & Innovation, working with patients at their offices in Torrance, Culver City, and Long Beach, California.

Throughout his academic journey, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from York University in Toronto, Canada, and graduated with his medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas. He then went on to complete an intensive residency program in internal medicine at Louisiana State University, before completing a fellowship in hematology-oncology at LSU’s Feist-Weiller Cancer Center.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Remaining up to date in his field, Dr. Benzar is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He has also co-authored and published numerous articles in esteemed medical journals, reflecting his commitment to advancing the practice of medicine. 

Beyond the realms of academia, he actively engages in volunteer work, contributing his expertise to initiatives like Family Health Day at LSU Health – Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore, Maryland.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

On a more personal level, Dr. Benzar’s global perspective and fluency in Ukrainian contribute to the diverse tapestry of The Oncology Institute, allowing him to communicate effectively and empathetically with a wider spectrum of patients.
