Dahana Wenutu's Expert Contributions
  • How often should busy people have massages?

It is up to each person. Massage is designed to release the tension from your musculo-skeletal system. Doing so prevents pain from the constricted muscles. Massage releases toxins that build up from stress and it’s important to “flush” them out. This can be beneficial on a weekly, bimonthly or monthly basis. There are other techniques to utilize for daily relaxation: yoga, guided visualizations, qigong exercises, meditation… READ MORE

  • Does falling asleep during a massage make it difficult for my therapist?

In general, this is not a problem for the therapist. Massage is meant to relax you, so falling asleep is natural. Being unable to awaken you would be a problem. READ MORE

  • Can massage therapy help with chronic pain?

Massage and the less invasive (no stroking or pressing in on trigger points) passive treatments will work well in alleviating some pain. Internal inflammation will do better with a combination of these techniques and internal treatments with probiotics, ginger, etc as appropriate. READ MORE

  • Can a massage actually hurt my back?

Should not be. Was the massage through a professional bodyworker or friend? I could offer possible reasons, but can’t be sure. These would include: the pressure was too deep, or the therapist rushed the treatment, not allowing the body to open under their hands, which can cause black-n-blues, spasms and soreness. READ MORE

  • Is there such a thing as "too much pressure" in massage therapy?

Yes. Communicate to your therapist when a stroke or pressure point is uncomfortable Massage does NOT follow the no pain/no gain philosophy. When we release knots (calcium build-up amongst fascia), it’s painful if it causes you to writhe, lift your shoulders, or stiffen your body, it is counter-productive. Let your therapist know when something feels good, and when it does not. READ MORE

  • Why is it recommended to drink water after a massage?

Massage flushes out toxins from your muscles. You need the water to flush them through your digestive and urinary systems so the toxins don’t cause discomfort later in the day or night. READ MORE

  • Is reflexology better than a massage?

Not necessarily better, just different By releasing the points affiliated with the various parts of the body allows for release of pain in each area. With a massage, it’s a more spa-like experience: you are lieing down, not holding your body up, or shifting in a chair; there may be softened lighting, soft music, perhaps aromatherapy oils or candles. READ MORE

  • Do the effects of a deep tissue massage last longer?

Any massage lasts a good while if you are relaxed. This allows the therapist to attain easy and smooth access to the muscle/tendon/fascia. If you were able to relax under the deep pressure, it would allow for a full experience. READ MORE

  • Can massage therapy treat muscle pain?

    Yes. READ MORE

  • What are the benefits of a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage is designed for relaxation purposes only. It is a lighter touch, the therapist flows one stroke into another; from one section (shoulders) flowing into the next (trapezius or rhomboids). READ MORE

  • What are the benefits of massage for seniors?

Seniors tend to be more sedentary than their years working. With age also comes a longer time to warm up the muscles of the body, upon awakening from 8 hours in bed. Some seniors suffer with arthritis. Painful. The stress and any pain he may be in will cause him to tire more easily. You haven’t said what is stressing him out. There’s a direct correlation for all of us with the Body and Mind. Seeing someone about the issues stressing him will help. Having a massage may not make his concerns go away, but it will relieve the stress it has taken on his body. Fact: Stress is the number one cause of most dis-ease in the body. READ MORE

  • What can I do for my shoulder and neck pain?

Something has caused this. Were you doing anything strenuous like putting up window screens, painting a room, lifting heavy objects over your head (using the right arm and hand to do so)? Massage will help with releasing the pain. Chiropractic care can alleviate if you’re out of alignment along the spine, as a result of the activity that is connected to the pain. READ MORE

  • Can a massage relieve my anxiety?

Hard to say. If you are afraid of traveling, or leaving your loved ones for an extended period, the massage won’t take away your fears. Identifying the source of your anxiety, talking about it with involved parties, will help. Afterward a massage can relax the muscles that have been stressed by your emotional/mental stress.. READ MORE

  • What causes knots in your muscles?

Knots are caused when you’ve held that muscle group in the same position for an extended period of time (sitting at a computer, hand on mouse or keyboard. The muscles are not moving independently, they are frozen in that one position. If you don’t exercise them afterward (tennis, racquetball, pickle ball), then after several days, the skin connecting these muscles will form a knot. It is calcium build-up. When a therapist goes in to release it, she is freeing the individual muscles, so they can move independently of one another again. READ MORE

  • Do the effects of a deep tissue massage last longer?

Without seeing you, I cannot say what modality will be the most appropriate to bring you pain relief.  In some cases, the client or condition does not tolerate deep tissue massage.  In those cases, Trager or CST will achieve the desired result.  Dahana READ MORE

Thank you for your question. In some cases, a massage using myofacial release, can help with your hip.  Another cases, a modality known as a Traeger is more effective, and could be a combination of modalities. You need to be seen by bodyworker who is also trained in Traeger to discuss further. Thank you,  Dahana READ MORE
