Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Paraag Chowdhary, who serves patients in Augusta, Georgia.

Dr. Chowdhary is a board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon. Since August 2023, he has been practicing at Piedmont Heart and Vascular Institute in Augusta, Georgia. 

Bringing unparalleled expertise and compassion to his practice, Dr. Chowdhary specializes in the treatment of coronary artery disease, complex aortic disease, structural heart disease, valvular disease, and atrial fibrillation. He employs a variety of treatment modalities, including open surgery, endovascular procedures, minimally invasive techniques, and transcatheter therapies such as the Convergent Procedure for Atrial Fibrillation, ensuring comprehensive care for his patients.

Born in New Delhi, India, Dr. Chowdhary earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree from Kasturba Medical College in 2008. Upon relocating to the United States, he began his medical training as a postdoctoral research fellow at Yale School of Medicine from January 2010-June 2010, and as a PGY1 Preliminary Resident in Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut from 2010 to 2011. 

Dr. Chowdhary continued his residency there, progressing to PGY2 through PGY6 as a Categorical Resident in Surgery from July 2015 to June 2019. During his residency, he also served as a Visiting Resident in Thoracic Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York in July 2017, and as a Visiting Resident in Cardiac Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in September 2017. 

Following his residency, Dr. Chowdhary pursued further specialization, first as a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow at Rush University Medical Center from August 2019 to September 2021. He then continued his fellowship training as a Complex Aortic/Structural Heart Fellow at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. from October 2021 to July 2023.

Dr. Chowdhary has served on several esteemed academic committees at Saint Mary’s Hospital, including the Surgical Education Committee, the Surgical Site Infection Committee, the Trauma Performance Improvement Committee, and the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

His impressive qualifications include certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS). Additionally, he actively participates as a member of both the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Haryana Medical Council.

Board certified in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Chowdhary is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.

In 2003, during his first year of medical school, Dr. Chowdhary received a Certificate of Merit and was awarded a Gold Medal in Biochemistry, along with a Prize for Excellence in Biochemistry from the All India Conference of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India. The following year, in 2004-2005, he continued to excel academically, earning another Certificate of Merit in his second year of medical school. Additionally, he was honored with a scholarship from the Sir Ratan Tata Trust for his outstanding academic performance during the same period.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Chowdhary has contributed significantly to his field with numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstract publications, abstract presentations, and engaging poster and conference presentations.

Beyond his medical endeavors, he leads a vibrant life filled with diverse interests. He finds joy in photography, cooking, expressing his creativity through sketching, immersing himself in the world of music, and honing his skills in table tennis and cricket. 

Fluent in both English and Hindi, Dr. Chowdhary effortlessly navigates between cultures and languages, enriching his interactions and experiences along the way.
