Get to know Interventional Radiologist Dr. Kirk Minkus, selected as a Top Doctor who serves patients throughout the State of Arizona.

An extensively trained interventional radiologist of almost 20 years, Dr. Minkus is affiliated with Southwest CardioVascular Associates. Renowned for his expertise in diagnosing and treating Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), Vein disease causing leg swelling, cramping, or pain, and Pelvic Vein outflow restriction (May-Thurner Syndrome), he is one of the senior partners of a premier PAD and Venous disease treatment center, boasting one of the highest case volumes nationwide in both diseases.

With a focus on minimally invasive procedures, he consistently achieves remarkable success rates while maintaining a steadfast dedication to ensuring the comfort and well-being of each individual under his care. His approach combines cutting-edge techniques with a compassionate bedside manner, earning him the trust and admiration of both patients and colleagues alike.

Among the comprehensive range of services offered at his practice, Dr. Minkus specializes in treating conditions such as Pelvic Congestion Syndrome with coil embolization, and he is recognized as a leading expert in May-Thurner Syndrome Stent placement in Arizona. Additionally, he excels in procedures such as Kyphoplasty for spine/vertebral fractures, Hemodialysis Fistula Maintenance, Port Placements and Removals, DVT Leg Clot Treatments, and IVC Filter Placements and Removals. He also performs uterine fibroid embolizations for women with heavy menstrual or intermenstrual to resolve bleeding or allow for pregnancy to be carried to term.

Back in 1998, he earned his medical degree from the St. George’s University School of Medicine with additional certification in HIV research, before completing his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Toledo in 2003. Later, he completed his fellowship in interventional radiology at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, in 2004, having satisfactorily mastered almost 70 different interventional procedures around the body.

An authority in his field, Dr. Minkus is double board-certified in diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialization that involves performing a range of imaging and minimally invasive, catheter based therapeutic procedures to diagnose and treat many clinical problems. These procedures are performed same-day in an outpatient ambulatory procedural center where the patient needs no overnight hospital stay. Vascular & interventional radiologists focus on diseases of the blood vessels and lymphatic system, but also treat other conditions such as cancer, bleeding, and pain caused by certain pathologies.  They perform minimally invasive treatments that are significantly more affordable, and have less risk, pain, and recovery time compared to open surgery.

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Minkus has been the recipient of the Patient’s Choice Award and the Most Compassionate Doctor Award, both bestowed upon him in 2013 by Vitals.com. Furthermore, he was recognized as one of the Top 10 Doctors in Arizona by the same platform in 2014.
