Accomplished MD, PhD, Embarks on a Path of Medical Leadership in Syracuse, New York

Dr. Carina Hernandez, has established herself as a professional of exceptional merit, blending her profound knowledge of chemistry with a passion for medicine. Her academic odyssey commenced at St. John’s University, where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry & Biology in 2008, setting the stage for a remarkable career trajectory.

During her years at New York University pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry under the tutelage of Dr. Nadrian Seeman, Dr. Hernandez’s research focus on crystal constructs and DNA lattices showcased her innovative approach to scientific exploration. Her groundbreaking dissertation, “Couture Crystal Constructs: Self-Assembly of 3D DNA Crystalline Lattices,” underscored her prowess in designing and solving DNA motifs through single-crystal x-ray diffraction.

Not content with theoretical achievements, Dr. Hernandez actively engaged in experimental work at prestigious research facilities such as the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and hands-on scientist.

Transitioning seamlessly from academia to medicine, Dr. Hernandez completed her Medical Degree at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in 2021. Embarking on her medical residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital, she honed her clinical skills as a resident physician from July 2021 to June 2024 before assuming the pivotal role of VA Chief Resident in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Syracuse, New York, starting in June 2024.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Hernandez is a dedicated member of esteemed medical organizations including the American College of Physicians – New York Chapter, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Medical Association. Her commitment to excellence and patient care is evident in her continuous involvement in advancing medical knowledge and practices.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Hernandez finds solace in the serenity of the beach and takes pride in her fluency in both English and Spanish.
