What do you do if your dog's heart is racing?
If you're dog's heart is racing due to anxiety, stress or exercise, you can calm them down by petting them with long gentle strokes down their back and use soothing (not high pitch) voices. However, if your dog's heart is racing while your dog is at rest (just sitting and doesn't seem stressed or anxious), then I would recommend taking your dog in to their primary care doctor or a cardiologist, as your dog may have an underlying heart condition. What deficiency causes hair loss in dogs?
There are multiple causes of hair loss including ectoparasites, endocrine disease, hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. allergies), or infection. Zinc-responsive dermatosis is often represented in huskies and malamutes or a few other large breeds, is typically limited to the face and does respond to zinc supplementation. Deficiencies in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids may also result in hair loss, and copper deficiencies may result in color dilution but not hair loss. READ MORE
Why is my cat's leg stiff?
It is possible your cat's leg fell asleep as our legs do if you stay in a position for a prolonged period of time with a lot of weight on our leg. However, there could also be other causes of leg stiffness, such as infection, immune-mediated disease, thrombosis (check to see if your cat's leg is cold) or neoplasia. If your cat's leg is stiff for more than a day, I would recommend taking your cat to their primary care doctor. READ MORE
Rabies question?
It's very unlikely, but unfortunately is possible. However, since you washed your hands soon afterwards and the scratch on your hand was small and already a day old, the likelihood of you having rabies is extremely low to none. You should definitely be okay! However, if you are concerned, I would contact your physician, so you can undergo the prophylactic protocol. READ MORE
How can I test my dog's eyesight?
If your dog is running into things, that can definitely be the first sign. Also, not if they are running into things just at night or during the night and day. If just the night, your dog may possibly have night blindness. Otherwise, there are a couple of tests you can do at home which may help determine if your dog is blind. The menace test is where you swiftly move you hand near the corners of their eyes and see if they blink (without touching fur, etc). If they don't blink, this could be a sign that your dog is blind. Another test is the pupillary light reflex. In a dim room, shine a flashlight (this can be your phone's flashlight too) into their eye and see if their pupil becomes smaller immediately. If it doesn't, this can also indicate that your dog is blind. Another thing you can do is take an object and see if they can follow it with their eyes. READ MORE
Will a dog's dislocated leg heal itself?
If truly dislocated and put back in it's place, the dog's leg can heal on it's own. However, an underlying cause for the dislocation is possible and would warrant treatment to prevent dislocation from happening again. I would recommend diagnostic imaging at your primary care doctor to ensure there isn't any underlying lesion or damage. READ MORE

What can I do if my dog is allergic to dust?
Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do besides dust/clean your home regularly (every other day or every 2-3 days) and give them anti-allergy medication if their symptoms continue (e.g. red eyes, coughing, sneezing, etc). You can give them 1 mg of benadryl per lb they weigh, given once or twice a day depending on severity (i.e. if your dog weighs 10 lbs, giving them 10 mg of benadryl in the morning and, if severe, another 10 mg at night but no more). How long does a dog allergy rash last?
It depends on if they continue coming into contact with what is causing the allergic rash and it depends on the severity of the reaction and if any medication is being given to treat the allergic reaction. If the patient continues to come in contact with the cause without proper treatment, the allergic rash won't likely go away. If removing the source and treated, the rash can heal in about 1-2 weeks. Allergic shampoos can also be purchased online and may help heal the rash. READ MORE
How can I help my cat's sore paw?
Pain medications prescribed by your veterinarian can help. Otherwise, if the paw is sore due to a minor traumatic injury, the paw should be able to heal on its own in about 1-5 days. However, it's possible that the cat's soreness may be due to an underlying disease process, such as infectious or immune-mediated. If so, redness, swelling and pain would likely continue after the 5 day period, and I would recommended bringing your cat to their primary care doctor. READ MORE
Do I have rabies?
Have you shown any symptoms? It is possible that you contracted rabies; however, if it's been a year and you don't have any symptoms such as a fever, headache, confusion, difficulty swallowing or paralysis, you likely don't have rabies. READ MORE
Is this cat eczema?
I would contact your physician or dermatologist to rule out any zoonotic causes of dermatitis. Possible causes include dermatophytosis (ringworm), scabies, and cheyletiellosis. READ MORE
How can I ease my dog's pain at home?
Limiting the amount of movement and exercise may help with pain; however, I would contact your primary care doctor to prescribe you pain medications for your dog. READ MORE
How can I treat my dog's hair loss?
Different causes of hair loss include endocrine disorders, ectoparasites, fungal organisms, immune-mediated disease, and hypersensitivity (i.e. allergies); all of which can be treated with medications prescribed by your primary care doctor or a specialist. I would recommend bringing your dog to their primary care doctor or a board-certified dermatologist to determine the cause and prescribe proper treatment. READ MORE
Rabies fear?
No, I would not be worried about rabies, especially since the dog is so young (rabies has an incubation period of 2 weeks to 4 months) and they didn't break skin (one of the most important parts). :) READ MORE
What should I do if my cat is coughing?
I would recommend taking your cat in to their primary care doctor for bloodwork and radiographs. Possible causes of prolonged coughing in cats include feline asthma, allergies, and pneumonia. READ MORE
What is the fastest way to get rid of dog lice?
Ridding lice from your dog and in your household is quite the process, so I apologize. Unfortunately, there is no fast way to get rid of lice. You can treat lice with medication; however, you would have to go to your primary care doctor for a prescription. There are also some shampoos available online formulated to kill lice, and I would recommend bathing your dog according to the instructions. After bathing, use a fine-toothed comb (you can purchase them online that are specific for ridding lice) to remove the lice as well. You will also have to frequently (every day/every other day) clean your dog's bedding and anything else they come in contact with for at least 2-3 weeks. READ MORE
Can I use human eye drops for my dog?
It depends on what eye drops you're using. I would contact your primary care veterinarian or a veterinary ophthalmologist to double check; however, oftentimes human eye drops aren't formulated properly for dogs. It is likely that you are unable to use your medication for your dog's eyes. READ MORE
Will dog UTI resolve on its own?
Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it, since trying to let UTIs resolve on their own may result in an ascending infection and more detrimental problems such as renal disease. I would recommend bringing your dog in to their primary care veterinarian, so they can perform a culture and susceptibility on their urine and prescribe proper antibiotics. READ MORE
I was bit by a raccoon?
You should be alright but there is always the possibility of rabies, especially if they broke skin. To be sure, I would recommend contacting your physician, so you can get a prophylactic protocol started. READ MORE
