Making Strides in the Field of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Kansas Medical Center

Dr. X. Long Zheng, currently holds the prestigious position of Russell J. Eilers MD Endowed Professor and Department Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. With an illustrious academic background and a wealth of experience in research and academia, Dr. Zheng is recognized as a leading expert in his field.

Having obtained his Medical Degree from Nanchang University, China, and his PhD from the University of Vienna, Austria, Dr. Zheng continued to expand his expertise through a residency in pathology and fellowship in transfusion medicine and hemostasis at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His career trajectory saw him achieve tenured Associate Professor status at the University of Pennsylvania before being recruited to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he held the position of a tenured Professor of Pathology and Division Director of Laboratory Medicine.

As the principal investigator funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Dr. Zheng’s research primarily focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a critical blood disorder with potentially fatal consequences. He and his colleagues have published their groundbreaking work in over 140 manuscripts in highly reputable journals and six highly sought-after book chapters such as Williams Hematology, Clinical Hematology, and Principles of Critical Care.

Dr. Zheng’s influence extends beyond his research endeavors, as he actively participates in patient care and contributes to the academic community through his roles as a standing member of the Hemostasis, Thrombosis, and Blood Transfusion (HTBT) study section at National Institute of Health (NIH), and as an associate /section editor for esteemed journals such as Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Annals of Blood, Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Genomics, etc. His dedication to education and mentorship is evident in his guidance of numerous medical and graduate students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty, and physician scientists.

A member of several prominent professional organizations, including the Association for Academic Pathology, the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies, the American Society of Hematology, the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, the American Society for Apheresis, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and the Chinese American Pathologists Association, Dr. Zheng’s contributions to the field have been widely recognized.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he enjoys leisure activities such as fishing, traveling, and sightseeing, with Austria, Italy, and Switzerland holding the special places in his heart as the favorite destinations.
