Innovative Programs Transforming the Lives of Older Adults in Miami Township

Lieutenant Jim Petry, a dedicated member of the fire service since 1989 and a full-time firefighter with Miami Township since 2000, is making significant strides to promote safety and well-being among older adults in the community. With an impressive 25 years of experience working with this demographic, Petry has developed a series of impactful initiatives aimed at enhancing home safety and reducing emergency incidents.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by seniors, he launched the Senior Home Safety Program, which emphasizes fall prevention and home safety. Through educational workshops, he shares vital strategies with elderly residents and their caregivers, empowering them to create safer living environments. His commitment to community well-being is further demonstrated by his extensive work in conducting over 400 home safety checks for residents in Miami Township, Milford, and Loveland.

Building on his passion for proactive care, he has introduced a groundbreaking initiative known as Community Paramedicine. This innovative program is designed to address the needs of high-utilization residents by focusing on prevention and resource connection. By evaluating residents in their homes, Jim identifies essential services and connects them with community resources, effectively mitigating the need for emergency responses. Remarkably, his efforts have resulted in a 50% reduction in repeat 911 calls and emergency room visits among high-utilization individuals, showcasing the transformative impact of his resource management approach.

Education-wise, Lieutenant Petry holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health & Safety and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Counseling at Xavier University. His academic background, combined with his extensive hands-on experience, positions him uniquely to address the multifaceted needs of the community he serves.

The Miami Township Fire Department is proud of Lieutenant Petry’s dedication and innovation in enhancing the lives of older adults. His proactive initiatives not only improve safety but also foster a sense of community and support among residents. As he continues his work, Lieutenant Petry exemplifies the spirit of service that defines the Miami Township Fire Department.
