Chief Medical Officer at Seno Medical Instruments, Inc. Driving Breakthroughs in Opto-Acoustic Imaging

Seno Medical Instruments, Inc., a pioneering medical imaging company in San Antonio, Texas dedicated to advancing cancer screening and diagnosis technologies, proudly announces the continued dedication of Dr. Thomas Stavros, MD, FACR, FSRU, FRANZCR, as Chief Medical Officer since mid-2012. With over 30 years of specialized experience in breast imaging, Dr. Stavros brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the company, leveraging his extensive experience to drive the commercialization of groundbreaking imaging technologies that improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Stavros has been a prominent figure in the field of mammography since 1976 and has played a vital role in the development of high-frequency hand-held breast ultrasound since 1981. His expertise encompasses general ultrasound, breast imaging, and intervention, including ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) and core biopsy techniques in the thyroid and head and neck regions. 

Seno Medical Instruments is at the forefront of medical innovation, developing opto-acoustic imaging, a novel technique that combines optical and ultrasound imaging to enhance the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. The company’s strong management team, alongside a nationally recognized Medical Advisory Board, is dedicated to securing regulatory approval and successfully launching these transformative products into the market.

Dr. Stavros holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Chemistry from St. Olaf College and a Medical Degree from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He completed his internship at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, and his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. 

Recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Stavros is a Fellow of multiple prestigious organizations, including the American College of Radiology, the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology, where he was the Traveling Baker Professor in 1999.

In addition to his leadership role at Seno Medical Instruments, Dr. Stavros is a Professor Specialist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is a reviewer for several medical journals, has authored numerous articles, and is the co-author of the definitive textbook on breast ultrasound. Renowned for his contributions to the field, Dr. Stavros has delivered over 2,000 invited lectures and abstracts worldwide and is an investor in many companies.
