Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Vidhyalashmi Kannan, who serves the population of Mesa, Arizona. Dr. Kannan graduated with the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in India in 2005, giving her over a decade of experience in her field. After obtaining her Medical Degree she completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Austin. Furthering her training she then completed a fellowship in endocrinology at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Kannan is dual certified in Endocrinology and Diabetes and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine. To stay up to date in her field she remains a professional member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Thyroid Association, and the Endocrine Society. She has volunteered for several medical missions, including the Ramakrishna Mission in rural areas of India and the tsunami relief camp in Chennai, India. She currently practices with her private practice Desert Sky Endocrinology and is affiliated with Mountain Vista Medical Center where she holds an expertise in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine. Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. It is also concerned with the integration of developmental events proliferation, growth, and differentiation, and the psychological or behavioral activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception caused by hormones. Specializations include behavioral endocrinology and comparative endocrinology. The endocrine system consists of several glands, all in different parts of the body, that secrete hormones directly into the blood rather than into a duct system. Hormones have many different functions and modes of action; one hormone may have several effects on different target organs, and, conversely, one target organ may be affected by more than one hormone.
