Psychiatrist | Psychiatry
15521 Midlothian Turnpike 105 Midlothian VA, 23113About
Dr. Bruce R. Stevens has established a new outpatient practice in Midlothian, Virginia where he specializes in adult psychiatry. He brings 25 years of experience to an outpatient setting that emphasizes top quality, up to date, and comprehensive psychiatric care. Dr. Stevens is committed to providing you with: timely scheduling of initial appointments (new patients are often seen within a few of days of calling); little or no waiting time in the office; longer appointment sessions in an unhurried atmosphere; the option of convenient online appointment sessions; online prescription services; added availability; and convenient appointment scheduling. Beyond clinical assessments, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacological interventions, additional services offered include TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy). Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS Therapy) is a safe and effective treatment for individuals diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who have not experienced satisfactory improvement from antidepressant medication. TMS Therapy can be used in conjunction with medication or as a stand-alone treatment. TMS Therapy works by delivering magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation – areas known to be underactive in those diagnosed with MDD. The magnetic pulses stimulate brain cells, thereby improving the brain’s ability to regulate mood. I strive for providing compassionate and professional psychiatric services. I have always practiced my art with a high sense of integrity and take great pride in being a psychiatrist. The responsibilities incumbent in my position are taken very seriously. I have a tremendous amount of respect for mental illness and the impact it has on individuals inflicted as well as for the family of such patients. In my opinion, there is no greater a medical illness than one that afflicts the mind. The feelings I possess regarding my practice of psychiatry can be summed up perfectly by Maimonides' Physician's Oath: "May the love of my art inspire me at all times”. My practice style places a strong emphasis on accurate diagnosing, which I have found to be one of the most common reasons for poor patient outcomes and failure to respond to treatment. Being able to arrive at the right diagnosis is the result a complex recipe of experience, scientific knowledge, allotting an appropriate amount of time with your patient, and a highly valuable ingredient ...often missing in psychiatrists in my opinion...what I refer to as the “Art of Psychiatry”. This “art’ is not something you can be taught or learn in medical school or residency. I am a strong believer in psychotherapy, and encourage my patients to engage in concurrent counseling, when appropriate, that employs the right modality geared towards their diagnosis and etiology. Additionally, it is my belief that most patients are over-diagnosed and over-medicated (contributing to poor outcomes). I pride myself on being a minimalist when it comes to prescribing psychiatric medications.
