Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Villar, who serves patients in Pensacola, Florida.

Dr. Villar is a highly-skilled neurosurgeon with expertise in treating complex brain and spine disorders. He is currently based in Florida, working with patients at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola and along the Gulf Coast of the U.S.

In his practice, he specializes in treating a variety of brain and spine disorders, including brain tumors, traumatic injuries, neurological disorders, and degenerative neck and back problems like disc herniations, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis. When appropriate, he utilizes minimally invasive techniques for both brain and spine surgery, which can result in faster recovery times and reduced discomfort for patients. He is a leading expert in the field of complex spinal deformity which includes revisions for prior failed back surgery and difficult scoliosis surgery. Additionally, he specializes in spinal oncology which can involve tumors of the spine, spinal cord, and/or nerves. 

Academically, Dr. Villar graduated with his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He was named a Social Justice Scholar and a Culture in Health Care Scholar, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that all patients receive equitable and culturally sensitive care.

Wanting to further his training, he completed his internship in general surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, before receiving additional training in neurosurgery and complex spinal deformity at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health. He also completed a specialized concentration in spinal surgery certification with the ABNS. 

On a professional level, Dr. Villar has contributed to medical textbooks and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He receives referrals from patients from all over the United States, Latin America, South America, and the Caribbean. His peers have recognized him as “the Doctor of Doctors!”

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.

As a bilingual surgeon fluent in Spanish, Dr. Villar is able to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients and their families, helping to ensure that they fully understand their diagnoses, treatment options, and post-operative care.

Outside of work, he enjoys a variety of activities that keep him physically and mentally engaged. He competes in Ironman triathlons, a challenging combination of swimming, cycling, running, as well as enjoys boating and fishing. He is also an avid auto racing enthusiast, a Florida Gator fan, and enjoys spending time with his friends and family.
