Back in the early days of her academic career, she earned her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1988. She then went on to complete her internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California San Diego Medical Center in 1989 and 1991, respectively.

An expert in her field, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
