Get to know Child Neurologist Dr. Shlomo Shinnar, who serves patients in Bronx, New York.

A towering figure in the realm of child neurology, Dr. Shinnar is the Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Management Center, Professor of Neurology, Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Population Health, and Hyman Climenko Professor of Neuroscience Research at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. 

Back in 1978, he graduated with his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, before completing two consecutive residencies in pediatrics and neurology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1980 and 1983, respectively.

Boasting board certifications in neurology and child neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as in pediatrics and clinical neurophysiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, his credentials are as impressive as they are extensive. He is also a Fellow of esteemed institutions such as the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), and an active member of the American Neurological Association and the Society for Pediatric Research.

An experienced clinical trialist, Dr. Shinnar is the Co-Director of the Einstein NeuroNEXT Center of Excellence for Clinical Trials in Neurology. At the forefront of his career is his groundbreaking research into childhood seizures, a subject he has delved into with unparalleled depth. From determining optimal strategies for initiating and discontinuing antiepileptic drug therapy to investigating the prognosis following a first seizure, Dr. Shinnar’s work has revolutionized our understanding of epilepsy in children.

His investigations extend to critical areas such as status epilepticus, SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), and febrile seizures, shedding light on these complex conditions and paving the way for innovative treatment approaches. Notably, his leadership as principal investigator in numerous NIH-funded studies has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of pediatric epilepsy research.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Shinnar has lent his expertise to industry-sponsored trials of new medications, bridging the gap between scientific inquiry and clinical practice. His role as principal investigator of the NINDS-funded “Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Childhood – FEBSTAT” underscores his commitment to unraveling the mysteries of epilepsy and its associated complications.

Recognized for his outstanding contributions, he has received accolades such as the Research Recognition Award from the American Epilepsy Society and the prestigious 2011 CURE Epilepsy Research Leadership Award. With over 180 peer-reviewed papers and more than 120 review articles and chapters to his name, his scholarly output is nothing short of prolific.
