Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. J. Douglas Cusick, who serves patients in Leawood, Kansas.

Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Cusick, is a master at transforming the breasts, body, and face in the most natural manner. At his private full-service plastic surgery practice in Leawood, Kansas, he provides cosmetic and reconstructive surgery options. There is a certain elegance to his procedures that has built him a reputation as one of the most respected and sought-after plastic surgeons in Kansas.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Dr. Cusick graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1981 and proceeded to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1986. He was also president of his medical class.

After completing his residency in general surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Southern California in 1990, he did an additional two-year residency in plastic surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he still serves as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Plastic Surgery.

Among the doctor’s impressive list of professional achievements, he is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, whose mission is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Kansas City Plastic Surgery Society. 

Within the Kansas City medical community, Dr. Cusick has served as President and Treasurer for the Kansas City Plastic Surgery Society, and on the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee of Saint Joseph Health Center.

His passion for service has led him to participate in more than 40 medical missions around the world. He performs reconstructive surgery on children and trains the local surgeons. His goal is to restore not only the children’s physical appearance and abilities, but also their self-esteem. He is one of the founding members of the Medical Mission Foundation, where he has served on the Board of Directors and is currently on the Board of Advisors.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done. With careful planning and a long-held philosophy, Dr. Cusick adheres to a strict code of ethics, operates only in accredited medical facilities, and fulfills continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.

On a more personal note, Dr. Cusick is married. He and his wife, Barbara, have three sons: Brandon, Andrew, and Christopher. He and his boys are all Eagle Scouts, and the family enjoys being active in sports such as skiing, water sports, and golf. Dr. Cusick is also an avid collector and restorer of antique mechanical music instruments.
