Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Saravanan Balamuthusamy, who serves patients in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Balamuthusamy is a board-certified nephrologist who is currently serving patients at Tarrant Nephrology Associates in Fort Worth, Texas. Tarrant Nephrology Associates was founded in 1981 by Dr. Ponniah Sankarapandian. Tarrant Nephrology has since evolved into one of the largest comprehensive Nephrology practices in Tarrant County. The group operates 23 dialysis centers, 13 office locations, and 2 vascular access centers.

Dr. Balamuthusamy is also affiliated with Texas Health Fort Worth and Texas Health Flower Mound. Dr. Balamuthusamy has served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Division of Nephrology at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona. 

Dr. Balamuthusamy is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Balamuthusamy serves as a reviewer for several medical journals. He enjoys teaching and has given lectures at several national conferences. He has also published numerous articles on hypertension and vascular access. Dr. Balamuthusamy is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and a Fellow of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology. 

Dr. Balamuthusamy earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Madras Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai, India. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Chicago Medical School where he served as chief medical resident for an additional year after graduation. Dr. Balamuthusamy also pursued a fellowship in nephrology at Tulane University in New Orleans. He served as the chief nephrology fellow during his second year of training.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys: including the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. A nephrologist, like Dr. Balamuthusamy, is also called a kidney doctor. They commonly treat chronic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, acute renal failure, kidney stones, and high blood pressure. They are also educated on all aspects of kidney transplantation and dialysis. Dr. Balamuthusamy’s areas of interest are hypertension, vascular access, and ICU nephrology.

Dr. Balamuthusamy is happily married and has 2 children. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.
