Get to know Pediatrician and Psychiatrist Dr. Katie Hoeveler, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Hoeveler is an attending at Healthy Minds Healthy Kids, an attending with the Behavioral Health Integrated Program, and Co-Director of the Medical Behavioral Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

As such, she leads or co-serves specific high level behavioral health initiatives to develop programs to provide optimal care for children with behavioral health needs. She also serves as a resource and support for the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (DCAPBS) with special attention to responsibilities related to departmental priorities which aim to improve practice, quality, and process regarding psychiatric-mental health for children, adolescents, and families.

“As both a pediatrician and a psychiatrist, my goal in my practice of psychiatry and psychotherapy is to promote overall health. This process starts with a caring relationship among the patient, the family, and myself. As I have honed my skills at CHOP, I have come to believe in the process of true shared decision making. We will work together to form an evidence based treatment plan and realize the patient’s best self!” stated Dr. Hoeveler.

Her areas of expertise include depression, ADHD, anxiety, autism, OCD, disruptive behavior disorders, tics, psychosis, college mental health, and catatonia.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the nation’s first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of children. Since their start in 1855, CHOP has been the birthplace for countless breakthroughs and dramatic firsts in pediatric medicine. Built on a foundation of delivering safe, high-quality, family-centered care, the Hospital has fostered medical discoveries and innovations that have improved pediatric healthcare and saved countless children’s lives.

With vast experience in her respective field, Dr. Hoeveler also holds the position of pediatrician and Partner with Children’s Primary Medical Care Group, and is a Senior Physician with the Children’s Heritage Foundation in Uganda, Africa and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

In the past, her academic activities included Associate Training Director at The Post Pediatric Portal Program at CHOP, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, and Co-Author of the ABC Anxiety Protocol at CHOP.

Pertaining to her educational background, Dr. Hoeveler has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Philosophy from Princeton University. She started her career in medicine by earning her medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She then went on to complete her internship and residency in pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital, University of Colorado, followed by a residency and fellowship in child & adolescent psychiatry at The Post Pediatric Portal Program at CHOP, where she served as Chief Resident.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

As a testament to her fruitful career, Dr. Hoeveler has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including Top Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist by Women in Medicine (2021), Top 5 Psychiatrists in Philadelphia by Kev’s Best (2020), Physician Partnering Award by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (2018), and the Medical Student Teaching Award by the University of Colorado (2005).
