Knee replacement therapy
As with any injury or surgery everyone responds a little bit differently with a total knee replacement, even knee to knee is different if you get both knees done by the same doctor. In general about 3 months time before you are feeling pretty good without pain during transitional movements. For example if you are lying down to sleep with a straight knee and then get up to sit on the side of the bed to a bent position you may have some stiffness and discomfort until approximately 3 months. It will also take 6 months to a year before you feel your very best like you never had it done. As for rehab ~1.5 months on the shorter end, but could last up to 3 months depending on individual goals. READ MORE
Pain in my hip - What kind of Doc do I see?
Hi, Absolutely, a doctor of physical therapy. Physical therapist have direct access and are your movement and musculoskeletal specialists. We are proven to be very accurate with diagnosis even without expensive imaging. A PT will be able to tell you if it is hip joint, hip flexor muscle, or SI joint. Severe hip joint degeneration does not occur overnight so more than likely it would have been a gradual increase in pain. Best, James READ MORE
Can PT help with motion sickness?
To whom it may concern, That is not true if it is true motion sickness. However, if it is BPPV, which is an inner ear issue, yes, this can be treated by a physical therapist within a matter of minutes. This type of vertigo or "room spinning" usually occurs when rolling in bed, sitting up, or lying down. James Dulkerian, DPT READ MORE
My knees are cracking all the time - Do I need PT?
To whom it may concern, There is no need to be worried, as this is a fairly common complaint. However, it would be recommended to seek the assistance of a physical therapist. It is great to catch this type of issue early before it becomes painful and the cartilage breaks down under the knee cap. It is typically due to tension of the thigh or quad muscle causing compression of the knee cap (patella) into the joint, causing it to "crack" click or pop. Weakness of the hip muscles and joint mobility can be other factors that a PT would help determine. Then, with treatment and recommendations for exercises to continue with at home, this issue can be resolved. I have cleared these issues in as little as one visit, but, depending on the severity, it may take 6-12 visits. READ MORE
I was diagnosed with torticollis and need to go to physical therapy. What kind of treatment will I receive?
Hmm, that is interesting. Torticollis is typically found in newborn babies or occasionally in the elderly population. It is typically treated with manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue work to reduce tension on one side of the neck and then strengthening exercises. READ MORE
