How long does alcohol induced depression last?
Basically until you find a program or other help that removes alcohol from your life. READ MORE
How long does it take for anxiety to go away?
There is no simple answer to this question. It all depends on what caused the anxiety in the first place. Once you have identified the factors that caused the anxiety and have found people to help you deal with those, the anxiety will disappear. READ MORE
How long does it take for anxiety medication to work?
Usually rather quickly, within a couple of hours READ MORE
Is CBT effective for anorexia?
I actually don’t know of any studies on this. I would suspect, however, that it would depend on the cause of the anorexia. Tony READ MORE
How do you detect BPD in children?
After working with over 500 children, I don't believe that there is such a thing as bipolar disorder in children. Most children who have had that designation are having regulation problems. My job is to help parents find ways to regulate their child with calm assertive energy - using proximity more than words. When children know you are bringing them affectionate, but firm energy, they change. READ MORE
Can working too much cause depression?
Yes, if it is work you don’t like READ MORE
Spouse on antidepressants?
Yes, this is a significant side effect of Zoloft. She needs to be tapered off the medication. There is a myth that these medications are protecting the person from depression. The problem is that they are addictive and need to be reduced very gradually. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
What to drink to calm nerves?
I'm afraid that there is no one answer to this question that fits all. The larger question is often, "What calms me, but does not addict me?" Your best bet is to pay close attention to your own experience. READ MORE
Should I put my teenager on antidepressants?
I would say no. There is considerable evidence that antidepressants used in adolescents cause increased suicidal tendencies and aggression. In my experience, adolescents respond very well if they find a good therapist. Many adolescents need help in navigating a difficult time of development, but the idea that antidepressants are the best treatment is a myth, not to mention a dangerous myth. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
How does a person with bipolar disorder think?
Actually, there is no clear answer to this question. First, every person has their unique way of thinking depending on the circumstances. A second problem is that different professionals use different criteria in using this diagnosis. You probably have a pretty good idea of how your friend thinks. Knowing your friend has been given that diagnosis is not going to tell you how he or she thinks. READ MORE
Do painkillers help with depression?
Only if the pain is a significant factor in your depression. READ MORE
Managing ADHD?
I really don't know if brain supplements would help. I would recommend learning mindfulness techniques as they are taught by Thich Nhat Hanh and Jon Kabat Zinn. These techniques of awareness can calm your nervous system and allow it to have the energy for better focus. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
What is the difference between bipolar 1 and 2?
They have similar criteria, but in order to be diagnosed with Bipolar I, you have to have experienced at least one manic episode - an episode that includes grandiose mood and activities that cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or requires hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others. READ MORE
How do forensic pathologists handle seeing death so often?
I don’t actually know, but I suspect that they focus on their job of determining the cause of death and their skills in determining that cause. READ MORE
How is bipolar disorder related to psychology?
Historically, the most serious difficulties related to mood changes were described as manic depression. Manic states consisted of extreme activation usually with destructive results. More recently the term bipolar has been used to describe just about any fluctuation of mood. When this is treated by a psychiatrist, it will most often be with medication. It is entirely possible, however, for most mood disorders to be treated successfully by any good therapist if they have been well trained and are experienced. The term bipolar is used in both fields: psychology and psychiatry. READ MORE
How to help adopted son with motor delays?
Most children's hospitals have special clinics devoted to developmental difficulties. Such a clinic could assess your adopted son and find a physical therapist who specializes in developmental difficulties. Such therapy is often quite effective. READ MORE
Can antidepressants help with anger?
The most typical antidepressants used today, the SSRI's (like Prozac), are not a good choice for treating anger. They often have the side effect of akathesia (a type of agitation), which can lead to more, not less, anger. READ MORE
How do you clear your mind?
One of the best ways to clear your mind, in my experience, is to be in touch with your body. In this regard, I have found the writings of Jon Kabat Zinn and Thich Naht Hahn to be of great help. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
What's wrong with me?
I would suggest finding two resources. One would be a good family doctor or internist who could make sure that you are not suffering from medical problems. Second would be finding a therapist who could listen to what is really happening to you and assess the different areas of your life that could be affecting you. I would be wary if you consult a psychiatrist - many of whom would talk to you briefly and then give you medication. Above all, you need an in-depth assessment of your physical and emotional wellbeing. READ MORE
What is the best antidepressant for anxiety and insomnia?
I would avoid the SSRI's and Effexor. Remeron is one medication used for depression complicated by anxiety. There has been a great effort to explain depression as a "brain disease" caused by chemical imbalance. In fact, however, there has been no scientific proof for such a theory. In every case I have evaluated, depression and anxiety have been due to life circumstances. For this reason, I recommend that one find a good therapist over taking medication. READ MORE
