Can anxiety cause manic episodes?
Only if you have already experienced manic episodes. Anxiety per se does not cause manic episodes. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
What kind of therapy is used to treat depression?
The most publicized non-pharmacological treatment for depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. However, in my opinion, the most important factor is choosing the best therapist for you. The qualities of the therapist are more important than the therapy technique. There are also a number of fine self help books on treating depression. My own favorite is Getting Undepressed by Gary Emery. READ MORE
Which antidepressants have the least side effects?
Regrettably, I don't have a simple answer to that question. Most of the SSRI's (like Prozac) have similar side effects, and you can look them up on Wikipedia. If you are considering taking an antidepressant, I would definitely look up the side effects for whatever medication is suggested. Side effects also can vary to some extent depending on the person. I would also consider other ways that you be helped with depression. In general, a good therapist is more effective than a medication. READ MORE
How do you know you have chronic stress?
You know that you have chronic stress when you realize a great deal of your time each day is taken up with a feeling of anxiety. This is usually the result of some significant part of your life being unresolved. This could be related to relationships, work, finances, your identity as a person, or even a past or present history of abuse. READ MORE
I think i might have ADHD?
Actually, there might be several different reasons for the symptoms that you describe. There is some controversy over whether ADHD is an actual disease. You might check out the internet site called Mad in America where these issues are examined in some detail. Many of the recommendations regarding how to help this "condition" are common sense ideas. The most usual recommendation is medication with a stimulant like Ritalin. Personally, I would not recommend that for the difficulties you have described. Tony Stanton, MD READ MORE
What happens to your body during a panic attack?
You can expect certain physiological effects but they can vary with the person. In general, a panic attack is going to activate the sympathetic nervous system. This means a higher heart rate, shallow breathing, and stress on the digestive system. If the panic is part of a longer pattern of stress and anxiety then you can have a PTSD situation where you get chronic activation of the "flight or fight" response which can be quite debilitating. Head discomfort?
If I were you, I would get a neurological evaluation just to make sure you don't have some neurological condition. It is also possible that your symptoms are related to some stress. But I would want to rule out any physical condition before I looked at possible stress. READ MORE
Hypomania with psychosis?
Actually, hearing voices and persecutory paranoia are not symptoms that are typical of mania. Mania is a state where the person is engaged in frenetic activity, sometimes barely sleeping, usually involving grandiose plans, with little concerns for the feelings or needs of other people. T. Stanton, MD READ MORE
How long does it take to treat a panic disorder?
Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this question. It depends on many variables. In my experience, panic symptoms are tied to specific life circumstances. Sometimes these circumstances are not clearly known to the person suffering. When they are made clear and addressed, the panic goes away. T. Stanton, MD READ MORE
What anxiety can do to your body?
The answer to what anxiety can do to your body depends on a number of factors. First, it is important to know what kind of anxiety you are suffering from. Is it acute, how long has it lasted, what is it related to? In other words, the history of your anxiety is very important to answer your question. The body's reaction to anxiety again depends how severe it is. Anxiety usually activates the sympathetic nervous system which regulates breathing, heart rate and the state of your internal organs (in particular the digestive tract). With sustained levels of anxiety, the heart can be compromised and various gastrointestinal problems can arise (like ulcers). Usually, your anxiety has to be pretty severe and pretty long-lasting to create these problems in your body. The more safety you feel, the less likely that your body will be impacted. READ MORE
Do I have ADHD?
It isn't possible to answer your question without a thorough assessment of your life situation. One important question is whether or not the problems you list are ones that you have consistently been present since your childhood. Even if that were so, it would not prove that you have ADHD. Usually, this question is tied with whether or not medications would help. I would be very wary of going in that direction without having a more thorough assessment. READ MORE
How does a doctor diagnose anxiety?
The answer to your question will depend on the training and orientation of the Dr. If the Dr believes that anxiety is simply a biological disease he or she will mainly be interested in what kind of symptoms you have and the pattern of those symptoms. These patterns are described as Separation Anxiety, Phobias, Social Anxiety, Panic, Generalized Anxiety, etc. In many cases, a Dr. will prescribe a medication to reduce your anxiety. Other Drs such as myself are much more interested in what is happening in your life that has resulted in anxiety so that we can help you change the circumstances that have caused it. READ MORE
What is the main goal of cognitive behavioral therapy?
I am not a certified practitioner of cognitive behavioral therapy, but having studied about it, I would say that the main goal is to identify thinking patterns that are harmful to the person, making the patterns clear to the person, and replacing them with more useful patterns of thought and action. Part of this is also making clear how certain feeling states (usually negative) are controlled by thought patterns. READ MORE
How long do antidepressants remain addictive?
The answer to your question involves a number of variables. Another way your question could be asked is "how long am I going to suffer from withdrawal from the antidepressants I took?" This depends on the type of antidepressant you took and how long you took it. A very good guide to answering these questions is found in the book called "The Antidepressant Solution" by Joseph Glenmullen MD. This is a clear description of the pros and cons of using antidepressants and a guide to safely withdrawing from them. READ MORE
Questions about some medications and side effects?
I would read a book like The Antidepressant Solution by Joseph Glenmullen, MD, which gives very careful instructions on getting off medications. From my experience, the medications are not treating disorders, they are blocking communication between feeling centers and thinking centers in the brain. People mistake feeling less with treatment. You might also consult the website for Mad in America which was started by Robert Whitaker. This gives information on all the main medication groups. I am not familiar with all the modalities that you mention in your message. Thus, I can't be of much help with them. Although I was trained as a psychiatrist, I do not use medications. I help people to solve problems in their lives. I find that when people can feel engaged with another person helping them they do not need medications. READ MORE
Do you have to go to therapy for this?
That sounds pretty horrible. It sounds like your polyps are making your life miserable. Probably your doctor is trying to treat them without surgery, but at some point, that may need to be considered. I don't know if all of your panic attacks and dizziness are connected to your polyps. You certainly don't have to have therapy but you may want someone to help you get through this difficult time - that could be someone like a medical social worker who knows about physical problems. At the same time, anyone that you can really trust who you can talk to regarding these difficulties could be really helpful. READ MORE
Is there an over the counter medication for depression?
I don t know of a specific over-the-counter medication that is sold as an antidepressant. In my opinion, learning some mindfulness practices would be much more helpful. I would also recommend you read Anatomy of an Epidemic to get a better idea of how medications fit into the larger picture of dealing with depression. READ MORE
Treating obsessive-compulsive disorder?
I would recommend that you find a good therapist - someone who you feel you can really trust who has experience in treating difficulties such as you are experiencing. In my experience, medications give only temporary relief. READ MORE
I think I have depression?
I doubt you have depression. It is more likely that you are experiencing a temporary low mood. Depression is defined as a condition that includes depressed mood, almost no interest in activities, significant weight loss or gain, poor sleep, no energy and that these symptoms are present continuously for at least 2 weeks. You say you are bummed out for no reason. In my experience, when we look carefully, we always do find a reason it just might not be obvious at first glance. READ MORE
Can alcohol make you feel depressed?
It all depends on context. In some situations, yes, it can make one feel more depressed. In other situations, one may feel more empowered. The important thing is to notice its effect on yourself - if it is making you feel more depressed, you avoid it. READ MORE
