What happens in CBT sessions?
I think there are two aspects to consider in answering your question. To my mind, the less important aspect is the method of CBT which is to examine your thought patterns and determine which of them is causing you more pain so that they can be identified and changed. The more important aspect, to me, is the actual person of the therapist who is helping you. If that person forms a good relationship with you and you feel safe and heard with that person, it is likely that the therapy will be helpful to you. That relationship is critical. READ MORE
Can bipolar disorder be managed naturally?
First, it is important to know exactly what kinds of difficulties your friend is experiencing. The diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder is an extremely broad term that could mean anything from the old diagnosis of Manic Depressive Disorder to mood swings or occasionally getting mad. The old diagnosis of Manic Depression usually referred to people having periods of Mania where they would become super active, start new businesses, overrun other people's needs and lives and finally crash in destructiveness - then get very depressed. Mania sometimes ends up being dealt with my law enforcement. Although medications are most often used to "control" mood swings, they are not effective in the long term. Once a person begins to learn the pattern of their moods and what they are related to, they can naturally start making changes that will lead them to become more successful in their lives. Often, in order to do this, they need a really good therapist that can help them identify patterns and help them recognize how to use their strengths. READ MORE
How can I calm my anxiety fast?
The problem you mention is one that I often had myself. Over time, I found several things helped. One was to become aware of my breathing and my body and keep returning to those awarenesses. Another was to imagine, ahead of time, that I was sitting across from just one or two people who were interested in what I had to say and then to be clear about the most important things I wanted to say to them. I find it is important to switch from the wish to give "a good presentation" to the feeling that I have something really important to say and these people need to hear it. During the actual presentation I like to pick certain people out of the audience and imagine that I am speaking directly to them. It can help to write out exactly what you are going to say and then rehearse it. What you will likely find is that, as you rehearse you will find places where you become more spontaneous and less dependent on a fixed text. Any time that you can also inject humor into the subject, it will help you to be more spontaneous. Eventually you will be able to leave the fear of being judged and realize that you have something valuable that your audience needs to hear from you. READ MORE
How do I stop worrying?
There are many online programs that could help you. In particular, programs that help you become more mindful can be of great help to you. For weight loss I understand the online program Noom has very helpful information. Once you know you can take action in these ways your worrying will decrease. It could also be of great help if you found a good therapist who was dedicated to helping you clarify the patterns that have led you to feel that you have no power to change your perceptions and your sense of powerlessness. Is ADHD inherited from the mother or father?
The subject of whether emotional patterns, whether it is depression, anxiety, or psychosis, can be inherited is a big subject. The author Jay Joseph has written books about this and concludes that there is no dependable evidence that these difficulties are inherited. There was great hope from the 1950's onward that genetic patterns would be discovered that would make it clear how difficulties were passed on from generation to generation. However, no clear evidence was discovered and promise of "twin studies" also failed to confirm genetic transmission. Therefore, I would answer your question by saying that ADHD is not inherited from either the mother or the father. READ MORE
How serious is ADHD?
It is important to know which difficulties your son was having that led to someone giving him the diagnosis of ADHD. Despite the many claims of experts, there is no genetic or biological basis for difficulties with attention. Once a pattern has been elucidated and become clear, it is usually possible to devise strategies that will help the person involved. Often, the child or teenager needs help in organizing their work and in focusing on it. Once they begin to experience mastery and agency, the difficulties usually can be overcome. READ MORE

What do antidepressants do to the brain?
The accepted answer to your question for many years was that antidepressants increased serotonin in the brain and in that way improved people's moods. Subsequently studies have shown that this theory about serotonin is not viable. Although it is not well publicized there is now clear evidence that these medications work by disrupting the connections between the feeling brain and the thinking brain so that the person does not feel as much. In almost all cases of depression, the depression is a sign that the person is not feeling that they have any real power in their life. You can learn much more about this subject by going online to a site called Mad in America or by reading the book by Robert Whitaker called Anatomy of an Epidemic. READ MORE

How do you calm down anxiety?
Although it is common to treat anxiety with medications, in my experience, this is not a lasting cure. Very often anxiety attacks are related to life changes and events which are not obvious, but in the background. Often it requires some detective work to identify triggers that are leading to the anxiety. By carefully tracking the anxiety, you can expose the issues that are causing it. READ MORE

If you can find a good therapist that can be very helpful. Most doctors will prescribe you antidepressants, but I would not recommend that you use them unless you have thoroughly researched the pros and cons.
