  • Why do my gums bleed around my crown?

You have some inflammation in the gum around the crown. I would recommend very good home care in that area to see if the situation improves. You could try first the Keyes method. Take a capful of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, add about a quarter teaspoon of salt. Dip your toothbrush in that peroxide salt solution then place the wet brush in some dry baking soda and work that mixture around the gum that bleeds. Then rinse your mouth out with water. You could also try using Listerine mouthwash. My home care is: first, swish and spit out with Closys. Then, brush for 2 minutes with Crest Regular paste. Next, floss and then use Listerine followed by ACT. Do this routine after breakfast and before bed. If doing that home care does not stop the bleeding around the crown, then have a dentist check the area. Taking vitamin C is also helpful for keeping gums healthy. READ MORE

  • Should I get a dental implant before or after braces?

This would be a decision that should be made with the dentist who is doing the braces. Without knowing the situation I would say that normally the implant would be placed after the braces have moved the teeth to the correct positions. Be sure and let the dentist know you are planning on having an implant so that space can be left to place it. READ MORE

  • Do dentures lead to receding gums?

Denture wear can cause the supporting bone to wear down. Receding gums is due to periodontal disease which causes loss of attachment of the gums to the tooth. Unchecked periodontal disease leads to bone loss supporting the tooth, and the tooth becomes loose and falls out or is extracted. You can also get some receding gum issues by over zealous brushing of the gums, but that is not so common. There are also some situations where a frenum attachment can cause a pull on a gum, causing it to recede. If you have a full denture then there are no teeth to see gum recession. But when there are no tooth roots in the bone, they have all been extracted, over time the bone supporting the denture will wear down. That is why dentures become loose and have to be relined or a new denture made. If you are wearing a partial denture, where you have some natural teeth supporting the partial denture then you won't necessarily see gum recession around your natural teeth. What can happen is that the partial denture can put extra pressure on the natural teeth causing them to loosen a bit. READ MORE

  • How long do dental implants last?

That is a good question. We don't know. Implants are not like natural teeth. Diabetics are more at risk to have an implant fail. Also if you are getting your teeth cleaned, implants need to be handled differently. Be sure the hygienist knows about your implant. Practice good oral hygiene. Use good mouthwashes when you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Don't smoke. If it is a single tooth implant, and you are a healthy non-smoker and practice good oral hygiene with regular dental check ups, there is a good chance your implant will last a long time, hopefully a lifetime. If the implant supports a bridge or a denture, then the extra stress could shorten its lifetime. Patient health issues can also cause an implant to fail sooner. READ MORE

  • How long do dental bridges last?

Depends on a few things. If it is a three unit bridge, just replacing one tooth, if it's done well and the occlusion is good, and the patient looks after it with good daily oral hygiene and regular dental appointments, it could last a lifetime. I have two three unit bridges in my mouth and one of them is over 40 years old and is doing fine. Longer bridges replacing more than one tooth puts more strain on the supporting teeth and that can shorten the lifespan of the bridge. If you are a healthy male, cleaning your teeth well and going regularly to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned and checked and it is a three unit bridge that is well done, I'd expect the bridge to last at least twenty to thirty years and probably a lifetime. • Is ibuprofen 800 mg good for a toothache?

Yes Ibuprofen 800 mg is good for a toothache but you do not want to exceed 2400 mg in a day. Current thinking is to combine Acetaminophen (Tylenol) with Ibuprofen. What I would recommend is to take 2 Tylenol 325 mg each and 2 Ibuprofen 200 mg each. Repeat every six hours as needed. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen work differently and are very effective together. • Can dentures last a lifetime?

They could, just don't lose them. I see patients in care homes and they regularly lose their dentures. Dentures often have to be relined. Your mouth changes and the dentures become loose. They can be relined chairside or for a more durable reline sent to the dental lab. When the dentures are sent to the lab, you are often without them for 24 hours. Dentures do break and teeth can break off. These can all usually be repaired. When you take your dentures out at night keep them in a cleaning solution. Don't let them dry out. The recommendation is that dentures may need to be replaced every 6 years. But that depends on the patient and how well they are doing. Insurance will probably pay for new dentures after about six years, depending on your insurance. READ MORE

  • Can a normal dentist replace my braces and filling?

You should go to a general dentist to have your filling done. If you're just having your braces removed a general dentist could do that, although an orthodontist would be better since he is more used to doing that. If you're having your braces replaced then definitely see an orthodontist. READ MORE
