Get to know Internist Dr. Stefanie R. Brown, who serves patients in Florida.

Holding many roles at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Brown serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Section Chief of the Division of Internal Medicine – Pediatrics (Med-Peds), and Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency.

As the Division Chief for Med-Peds, Dr. Brown works teaching the University of Miami residents and students at UHealth Tower, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Holtz Children’s Hospital. The mission of the Division is to provide high quality evidence-based care across the lifetime of patients and families. 

A 1996 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Brown pursued a residency in Med-Peds at Rutgers New Jersey followed by a chief resident year. 

Most recently, in 2020, she graduated with her Master of Business Administration Degree in Health Management and Policy from the University of Miami Herbert Business School.

Board certified in internal medicine, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

To boot, she is board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Since joining the University of Miami in 2008, Dr. Brown has been actively involved in several university and hospital-based committees, including the executive committee for Graduate Medical Education, and the Society for Black Physicians and Scientists. Her past leadership roles include: Assistant Dean for Diversity, Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine, and Med-Peds Residency Program Director. 

As a leader and clinician educator, Dr. Brown has active research in disparities in residency education and assessment, graduate medical education, and resident wellness.

Having held leadership in several regional and national organizations, she serves on the Advisory Council to the Florida Chapter of the American College of Physicians. She is also a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP).

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

Among her notable achievements, Dr. Brown has been named one of the South Florida Top Black Educators by ICABA. She also received the Excellence in Mentorship Award from UM Women in Academic Medicine, highlighting her dedication to guiding and supporting aspiring professionals. 

Furthermore, she was honored with a place in the Hall of Heroes by the SNMA (Student National Medical Association), and named one of the Most Accomplished Black Executives in the categories of both Professional and Academicians by ICABA.
