Is low platelet count bad for pregnancy?
It depends on what else is happening. A low platelet count by itself can still mean you have a healthy pregnancy, but you should be monitored closely by your pregnancy doctor and consult with a maternal fetal medicine specialist if you haven=E2=80=99t already. If you have low platelets combined with high blood pressure and/or high liver enzymes, that is potentially dangerous and you need to seek care immediately. =20 It also depends on how low the platelets are. Mildly low platelets are typically not a cause for concern. Moderately low platelets may mean you cannot have an epidural during labor, so consider working with a doula to help you manage your pain during labor without an epidural. Severely low platelets could be concerning and again should be watched closely by your pregnancy doctor (whether a family doctor, OBGYN, or maternal fetal medicine specialist) and at least consult with a maternal fetal medicine specialist if one is available).
