At Southeast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, the aim is to help restore each patient to their highest level of function through non-surgical procedures and therapies. The providers offer a wide range of Orthopedic and physical medicine and rehabilitation services for people who have physical injuries and impairments as a result of a condition or injury affecting nerves or musculoskeletal system.
After having graduated from Cape Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University, Dr. Bowen attended the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Upon earning his medical degree in 1987, he went on to perform his internship at Naval Hospital (San Diego), and his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1997.
He chose physical medicine and sports medicine because of its great diversity. He has put his expertise in the field to work as a current Team Physician at Southeast Missouri State University, and former Team Physician at the United States Naval Academy, Specialty Leader Advisor to the Surgeon General USN and Consultant to US Navy Special Forces.
“This has allowed me to combine Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Strength and Conditioning approaches to the nonsurgical aspects of treating patients with musculoskeletal and neurologic needs” expressed the doctor.
Focusing on a patient’s ability to function, Dr. Bowen is board-certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.
In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.
Moreover, he holds certifications in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and CAQ Sports Medicine.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
