Areas of research

Dr. McWhorter's pre-doctoral internship was at Northern Arizona University's Counseling and Testing Center in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Northern Arizona was her first choice for an internship due to the excellent opportunity to work with Native Americans (Hopi, Apache, Arapalo, Lakota, and individuals from a variety of other tribes) both on and off campus.  Because of the proximity to surrounding reservations, Dr. McWhorter was able to conduct her dissertation research that explored Native American spritual practices and philosphy as it related to individual well-being and, for those who did not adhere to the spiritual path of their ancestors, directly correlated to a high risk of drug and alcohol abuse as well as perpetration of emotional and physical abuse.

Dr. McWhorter later published her dissertation study in a Pulitzer Price nominee entitled 'Cry of Our Native Soul: Our Instinct for Creation-Centered Spirituality' released in June, 1998.  Since release of her book, she has lectured extensively on its message.
