Dr. Jeff Schulman, M.D.'s Expert Contributions
My daughter is prone to hormonal depression. What can I do?
Mood changes around the time of menstrual periods are not uncommon. If significant and functionally impairing, medication or hormonal treatments are available. Consult your pediatrician or primary care physician. A gynecologist or child psychiatrist could be consulted if necessary. READ MORE
Can yoga help my son improve his concentration?
Your son may just be sleep-deprived, stressed, exhausted, anxious, depressed, etc. He may have sleep or dietary problems. Primary attention problems can occur in college due to increased demands for time management, organization, and improved concentration. He could consult someone in the student health service at his school. Yoga probably will not improve his concentration. READ MORE
Is my child having panic attacks?
Talk to your son about what he fears and let him talk about his concerns. Reassure your child that he is safe and secure, and that you are there to protect him. If his anxiety persists, talk to your pediatrician or primary care physician. If problems continue, you may consult a child psychiatrist. READ MORE
My daughter still continues to be hyperactive. What should I do?
Yes. "Hyperactivity" typically decreases with age. If it is still an issue at age 14, she should be evaluated by a child psychiatrist. READ MORE
My daughter is addicted to her phone. What can I do?
Many teens are "addicted" to their phones (and so are many of their parents!) You can put time limits on phone use and let her earn more phone time by doing other things that she needs to do, such as homework, chores, etc. Everyone needs limits, and the earlier that children know they have limits, the easier it is for everyone. READ MORE
How can I help my teenage son deal with failure?
He should see a good child psychiatrist who actually listens to and talks with teens about their feelings and problems, or a good therapist (child psychologist, counselor, or social worker). READ MORE
Can autism be developed?
Autism is present from birth, although the signs and symptoms are not always picked up or diagnosed that early. Autism should be able to be diagnosed by age three. READ MORE
