Can a CT scan detect a lung infection?
Yes a CT scan can detect infections. However, the clinical history is equally important to make that determination. Typically- such a finding would be followed clinically and radiographically to assess concordance. READ MORE
Do you have to drink barium for a CT scan without contrast?
Depending on the reason for the exam or situation you don’t have to drink contrast before a ct scan. For example, no need for oral contrast if you can’t hold down anything or a ct test for renal stones. However, it wouldn’t hurt to take oral contrast before a ct scan as it would improve the ability to find incidental gastrointestinal findings or true lesions within the bowel like tumors or polyps. It could also help delineate bowel from other adjacent normal or abnormal structures. READ MORE
When should you get an MRI for a headache?
Should document how often and how long your headaches last. Also, if anything triggers the headache and what relieves you of the headache. Based on these factors, your physician may want to pursue an MRI or CT of the brain. An MRI uses NO radiation and a CT scan uses X-rays (radiation) to acquire images. READ MORE
Why do you have to fast for a PET scan?
The radioisotope that is used in PET is a glucose transporter. This PET radioisotope which also contains glucose will go to any metabolically active areas in the body which sucks up the glucose. However, if the glucose levels are elevated from food or drink taken before the exam, then the level of insulin will increase. When insulin levels increase, our muscles will take up the glucose or sugar instead of the cancer hungry cells that seek the glucose in the PET radiotracer. So basically the PET radioactive tracer may not go to the areas of interest which results in a suboptimal exam. READ MORE
How long do x-ray images take to be read?
An X-ray of a single body part can be read within minutes after acquisition of the images by the reading radiologist as long as they’re hung properly and taken with correct exposure (assuming they are acquired digitally and sent to the radiologist digitally). READ MORE
How long does a CT scan for kidney stones take?
A CT scan of the abdomen to evaluate kidney stones takes approximately 5 minutes after being placed on a CT scanner. I would also include CT of the pelvis as a stone may fall out of the kidney and lodge in the ureter, bladder or sometimes seen in the urethra on its way out of the body during urination. READ MORE
What type of CT is used for cancer screenings?
Any CT can be used to perform a body scan which takes a few minutes. There isn’t a specific CT scan that is used to detect cancer. However, most insurances do not cover CT whole body screening so the patient must pay for the exam out of pocket. READ MORE
How accurate are CT scans for kidney stones?
A CT scan is very accurate at detecting radiopaque findings such as calcium or other metals. I would prefer a CT scan over an X-ray or ultrasound if the kidney stone is a few millimeters in size as it can be missed on those studies or obscured by overlying bowel gas and stool rendering the exam suboptimal.
