Can I drink coffee before a PET scan?
Hi, Unfortunately, the short answer is no. Many sites have slightly different protocols, but in general, nothing other than non-flavored water during the 4 hours (this timing may vary) before your exam. So, you're aware they will likely cancel your exam if you do drink coffee. The important reason is that it may actually skew your results. Caffeine and sugars particularly can elevate metabolic activity and this can significantly affect the images your PET scan will make which can lead to a false diagnosis. Hope that helps and good luck! READ MORE

Get to know Pediatric Radiologist Dr. Tammam Beydoun, who serves patients in Orange, California.
Dr. Beydoun is a pediatric radiologist who treats kids and teens within the Department of Radiology at CHOC Children’s Hospital. Tasked with kicking off CHOC’s Interventional Radiology program, his passion is the use of minimally invasive procedures for abnormal blood vessel and lymphatic issues.
The Radiology Department at CHOC Children’s Hospital uses cutting-edge technologies to obtain the highest quality image, while at the same time reducing the patient’s exposure to radiation. This is especially important for children whose conditions require repeated studies over the years. The expert physicians and staff are dedicated to using the lowest dose of radiation necessary, without sacrificing the quality of images required for quick and accurate diagnoses. Many children are imaged in adult facilities where radiation doses can be up to 50 percent higher than at CHOC.
“I was drawn to IR because it’s kind of like being MacGyver—a lot of creative troubleshooting. In IR, no two cases are the same. You have a specific set of tools and can use them in any combination to do what you need to do, and you can modify it for any body part and almost any disease. You can go through the groin to work on the nose. You can work with glue, coils or stents. You can see through people with X-rays or CT scans. Each patient requires a novel approach, so I might have to come up with a different way to do something. That’s really fascinating to me” stated Dr. Beydoun.
Keeping in mind that the best medicine is preventative medicine, he board-certified in diagnostic radiology & vascular and interventional radiology by the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (AOBR). The AOBR is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
With a broad educational background, Dr. Beydoun completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine, and then attended medical school at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York. He performed his residency in radiology at Michigan State University, and his residency in pediatric diagnostic and interventional radiology at Phoenix Children’s. Then, he completed his fellowship in vascular interventional radiology at the University of Cincinnati.
When asked why he decided to become a doctor, Dr. Beydoun answered: “If I had to choose a moment when I knew it was for me, I’d pick the Hoag Clinical Care Extender program in 2001. I would see physicians come into people’s lives and change them instantly. As a physician, you can quickly earn a patient’s trust and, with that, really change the course of their life for the better. As a person who likes to take responsibility and initiative, I knew I wanted to do that for others. Even if I can’t help them myself, I wanted to be someone who could find them the care they need. It’s a privilege—a heavy privilege—and I don’t take that lightly.”
Prestigious professional organizations of which he is a member of include the Society of Interventional Radiology and the American Osteopathic Association.
Pediatric radiology is a subspecialty of radiology involving the imaging of fetuses, infants, children adolescents, and young adults. A pediatric radiologist is an expert in the diagnosis of illnesses, injuries, and diseases of infants, children, and adolescents, using imaging techniques and equipment. Many pediatric radiologists practice at children’s hospitals.
On a more personal note, Dr. Beydoun used to do a lot of outdoor rock climbing, which he has pared back on and now does safely indoors. He also loves anything automotive, as well as snowboarding.
If he weren’t a physician, he believes that he would be an engineer. “ I love solving problems, troubleshooting and anything related to computers, servers or electrical equipment. I’m always taking things apart and rebuilding them.”
