Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Shirley Penkar, who serves patients in Sugar Land, Texas.

A top professional in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Penkar is affiliated with Southwest OB/GYN, seeing patients at their offices in Sugar Land, Texas.

Southwest OB/GYN was founded in 1995 by an esteemed group of physicians who are well-respected for their expertise in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The practice is dedicated to providing excellence in women’s healthcare, so together they deliver the highest quality medical care and treatment to patients throughout the greater Houston and Sugar Land areas.

A Houston native, her interest in science led her to attend college at Rice University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology as well as in Economics. She then went on to receive her medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Parkland Hospital/UT Southwestern, one of the busiest obstetrical programs in the country.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

An active member of the Fort Bend Medical Society, Dr. Penkar received an award for Top Performance in Laparoscopic Skills and the Excellence in Colposcopy Award during her chief year of residency. She has also been the recipient of the On-Time Doctor Award in 2018.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts).
