Pregnancy concern?
How old are you? Have you had a full term pregnancy before? Your past miscarriage: was that a confirmed pregnancy or was it just a delayed period and you thought it was pregnancy? Any family history of recurrent miscarriages? This is important because you had a miscarriage in the past. If you are young and you have no medical problems, then slight brown discharge in early pregnancy is not unusual. About one in 5 pregnancies can have slight bleeding during the early pregnancy. This happens when your pregnancy is trying to establish a vascular communications with you . ( the blood do not mix). During that process you may have some discharge. If you have no cramping and no heavy bleeding, you can be reassured. One pregnancy loss does not increase your chance of another loss. However, I would recommend you to consult your Obstetrician to check your hormone levels and an ultrasound to confirm that you have a healthy pregnancy and is in the right place. Good Luck READ MORE
Is this HPV?
It has nothing to do with the tear. However, if you feel a bumpy, spiky lesion, most likely it is HPV. Not only this lesion, you may have other small flat areas infected with HPV. Use a cotton ball soaked in vinegar and apply it to that area. If it is HPV the lesion will turn white. This helps to identify even difficult to see flat lesions of HPV. READ MORE

Brown discharge after sex?
Brown discharge after sex has several reasons. 1. Can be of no significance if it occurred for the first time, close to your period 2. At your age, it could be due to simple problems like simple infections in the vagina, inflammation in the cervix, or due to a benign growth in the cervix called cervical polyp. These are simple issues that can be treated by your PCP or Gynecologist. 3. The most important and serious problem could be due to pre cancer or cancerous condition. But do not be scarred. Here are some things you need to know about pre cancer or cancer of cervix: a. High risk sexual behavior - meaning multiple sexual partners, especially if you do not use condoms to protect yourself or you have sex with someone who has high risk sexual behavior (even if that is the only person you have had sex with) b. HPV (Human Papilloma virus) infection. This usually results in abnormal PAP smear. This is also likely in your case. c. If there is cancer which is highly unlikely, one will bleed or have brown discharge most often after sex. d. Your Pap smear would have been abnormal. e. If you have oral or anal sex, same precancerous condition can happen in your throat and or rectum e. If you have been vaccinated for HPV infection in the past, it would give you protection for cervical cancer. Hope this helps Dr. Narmadha Kuppuswami, MD; FACOG READ MORE

Areas of research
Developed a software program called Womens Obstetrical Neonatal Death Evaluation & Reduction geared towards low resources countries. Have had 3 pilot studies for maternal health which is benefitting ~200,000 women in a poor state in India, Bihar.
Also developed a WONDER newborn App that could be used by low level providers to follow babies at the comfort of patient's home. The provider can get immediate consultation from the physicians through its telehealth capabilities. The same application can be used by a mother who uses a smart phone. An ongoing pilot study has demostrated its ability by saving lives of the newborns.
In addition, she has developed another mobile Application called WONDER Mom's App. This application is available both in App store and Play store and it is free with no strings attached. Mothers can download the application and follow their own health by using simple biometric devices like BP apparatus, thermometer and weighing scale. If these devices are blue tooth enabled, the values can be automatically uploaded into their mobile application. In addition she can key in any symptoms that she may experience. The system will give an alert if any of the information entered is abnormal and would encourage women to seek medical help. If the doctor is also enrolled into the program, the system will automatically send an SMS to the doctor about the patients condition. The doctor can immediately make an audio or video calls thereby avoiding all delays which are one of the major reasons for maternal complications including death.
