He specializes in bariatric surgery revisions including conversion from Gastric Bypass to Modified Duodenal Switch and Conversion from Lap Band to Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass or Modified Duodenal Switch. He was the first to perform a conversion from gastric bypass to modified duodenal switch (SIPS) using the da Vinci Xi surgical robot. Get to know Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Edward John Yatco, who serves patients in New York City, New York.

Dr. Yatco is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic bariatric and general surgery. He has performed laparoscopic surgery for obesity since 2002. He was also the first surgeon to perform a conversion from gastric bypass to modified duodenal switch (SIPS) using the Da Vinci Xi Surgical System. 

Dr. Yatco is the Assistant Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, New York. Lenox Hill Hospital is a 250-bed, acute care hospital located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It is a member hospital of Northwell Health.

Dr. Yatco also serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at The New York Medical College and as a Clinical Instructor for The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He has published numerous articles and has spoken at national conferences on the subjects of laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery. 

Prior to his recruitment to Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Yatco was a principal bariatric surgeon at The Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York where he was also involved in the training of medical students and residents in general surgery. Furthermore, he served as an instructor at The Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery where he taught surgical fellows how to perform bariatric and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Yatco graduated from Colgate University with a degree in molecular biology. He earned his medical degree with high distinction in research from The State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. After his general surgery residency at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in New York City, he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at The Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Westchester Medical Center.

Dr. Yatco is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery.

Dr. Yatco is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Additionally, he is a member of the American Medical Association, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgery, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch. As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Yatco performs minimally invasive robotic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and modified duodenal switch (SIPS, SADI, SADS, looped DS). He specializes in bariatric surgery revisions, including conversion from gastric bypass to modified duodenal switch, as well as conversion from lap band to sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass or modified duodenal switch.
