Get to know Pediatrician Dr. Maria J. San Andrés, who serves patients in Galveston, Texas.

Specializing in the health care of children, Dr. San Andrés is a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatrician with UTMB Health – Pediatric Primary and Specialty Care Island East Clinic in Galveston, Texas.

Located on Galveston Island, near the UTMB Health Galveston Campus in the Primary Care Pavilion, the Pediatric Primary and Specialty Care Island East Clinic provides primary and specialty care services to children.

Following the completion of her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science at Texas A&M University, Dr. San Andrés went on to obtain her medical degree from the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in College Station in 2010. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, after which she began working at UTMB in the General Pediatrics Clinic and at the St. John’s Hospital Newborn Nursery. 

With a passion for her profession, the doctor is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), which is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Founded in 1933, the ABP is an independent, nonprofit organization whose certificate is recognized throughout the world as a credential signifying a high level of physician competence. Certification by the ABP has one objective, to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. 

Among her professional affiliations, Dr. San Andrés remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Texas Pediatric Society, the Council on Children with Disabilities, and the Section on International Child Health.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends people be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. As a pediatrician, Dr. San Andrés provides medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. She is trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature. 

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. San Andrés enjoys baking and photography when she is not working. She also loves playing with her daughter, Adelina, who is 7 months old.
