Kathy Adatte-Ott Fibromyalgia

I am now 56 years old. I realize I lived with chronic pain and fatigue for over 15 years. In 2008 I finally found a new physician that worked with me to get a diagnosis and treatment. What do you do when you're feeling upset?

After a dozen years as a Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue warrior, I can honestly see what has been helpful in coping. In the beginning when I was bed bound, Christian music by Casting Crowns, Matthew West, Mercy Me, Need to Breathe, Toby Mac, would carry me through the hardest moments. I had headphones and immersed myself in the positive messages in these songs.

Now, I am able to be up and about each day for half the day. I use pilates and meditation to gain the control I need to stop my body from flaring. I have also learned breathing techniques that I can use on the spot. "Breathe in peace" and "Breathe out peace". I have a wrist tattoo to remind me to stop and breathe mindfully throughout the day.

There are some times that I just turn it over to God, I surrender it, and work hard not to grab it back. These are all things I had to learn as I am a type A person, letting go is the hardest part of coping.

What keeps you going?

I rely on my spirituality every day. I also try to practice gratitude. I think of a positive in my life during a difficult time. I keep a journal of my favorite quotes about life, living with pain and having gratitude. I am very lucky to have my spouse as a support system. I am thankful for the online Facebook support groups. I feel if I can offer a helpful or positive thought with others, then my pain can be justified. And if I need to not feel totally isolated, they are there. We all encourage one another. I am an advocate and have been to Capital Hill helping to create awareness and gain funds for research. When I speak to a Senator I represent all who suffer. I am strongly committed to advocacy and that keeps me moving and believing in a better day to come for all.
