As always an initial and extensive history and physical is essential and may help determine the direction of the evaluation as to the cause of the fever. so please remember that the fever itself when in the range of 101 to 102 and even 103 to 104, is not really harmful but may require a thorough investigation. One other point must be made. all these discussions pertain to kids of certain ages. it is needed to be immediately proactive with infants that are newborns and usually up to 2-3 months old that require immediate observation and testing and usually as an inpatient.
