Assessing and Treating the Root Causes of Your Chronic Neck and Back Pain

True comprehensive conservative management of chronic back and neck pain really requires the clinician to take a broad look at the person’s condition(s) and the multiple causes that have resulted in their ongoing problem. This necessitates that the doctor not only have competent diagnostic skill but also a strong working knowledge of all aspects of care that may need to be implemented. It is rare that a ‘one size fits all’ approach will be effective with chronic health conditions, particularly back and neck pain.

A complete initial assessment of a person’s condition should include: a detailed history of the problem AND lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the condition, a comprehensive physical examination, possible x-ray or even advanced imaging such as MRI. Sometimes even blood work will be part of a complete initial workup looking for things such as inflammatory markers, anemias, blood sugar imbalances and vitamin deficiencies that can add to a person’s inability to fully heal and repair.

From that point, based on findings and the processes that have created the condition, a care plan is presented and engaged. Conservative measures may include several to all of the following:

  • Conservative pain management (chiropractic, acupuncture, shock wave EPAT therapy)
  • Reduction of disc, joint and nerve pressure (chiropractic, decompression)
  • Reducing inflammation naturally (diet, nutritional supplements, low level laser, lifestyle)
  • Optimize mobility and stabilizing strength (physical therapy, muscle energy techniques-there are many, reconditioning)
  • Healing optimization (reconditioning through general exercise techniques)
  • Mental/emotional side of dealing with chronic pain/health conditions (biofeedback)

 

Ultimately, a well-managed chronic back or neck condition will not only reduce a person’s pain but also and quite importantly, address one’s weaknesses, imbalances and lifestyle factors that have contributed to the condition in the first place. Allowing the spine to continue to be imbalanced and weak, even with less pain, significantly increases stress on the discs, joints and muscles, recurring pain and the potential need for more invasive procedures including surgery.  So, the best recommendation is to not only settle for relief from your chronic pain, but to create a strong and mobile neck and back with a comprehensive conservative approach. Only then will one have truly lasting results and have confidence in a plan to maintain a strong, healthy neck and back.
