Medical Cannabis Is a No-No for Sleep Apnea, Experts Say

More research needs to be done before patients are prescribed medical marijuana

The Minnesota Department of Health told Newsweek that Minnesota’s medical cannabis program insists that clinicians use their best medical judgment when determining whether medical cannabis is the best choice for their patients.

They said, "The decision to use medical cannabis is one that must be made within the context of an ongoing patient-provider relationship. MDH encourages clinicians working with sleep apnea patients to review the American Academy of Sleep Medicine statement, as well as other research, to ensure treatment decisions are based on the best available information."

It is clear that more research needs to be done before clinics use medical marijuana for sleep apnea. For now, before medical marijuana is approved by sleep medicine experts, it's important for patients to discuss other options with their physicians.
