Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (Pediatric) Questions Common Cold

Is steam safe for kids?

I usually have my child inhale steam when she has a cold, just to clear her sinuses. But, I recently read that giving steam may increase a child's chances of cancer. Is it true?

Regardless of the controversy, steam may not be the best option for preventing sinusitis during upper respiratory infections. The better option when a child is developing a cold, is to use a nasal irrigation that is appropriate for their age, and these can be purchased from any Pharmacy. This will clear out any mucus and prevent obstruction of the sinus openings, and it may also be beneficial in helping the nasal cilia work better. Try it.
