Adolescent Psychiatrist Questions ADHD

Can my teenager benefit from therapy?

My daughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and is currently taking Adderall. So far, it's working for her, but I think she might also benefit from going to therapy alongside her medicinal treatment. Can teenagers with ADHD benefit from going to therapy, while taking Adderall?

Absolutely, there are behavioral skills that help to offset symptoms of ADHD and make life a little bit more manageable or easier for them. Medication is only one part, there's also habit forming and executive functioning skills that help through adulthood.
This answer is for informational purposes and is not treatment.

Medication for ADHD often shows medium to large improvements in attention and some other symptoms. The medicine likely freed up some brain power that therapy can help her figure out how to use for her benefit. The largest study of ADHD found talk therapy focused on ADHD PLUS medication had the largest improvement in children and teens.

I often say to folks, the medicine lets you access more of your brain power, now we have to figure out what to DO with that extra power and capacity.
Yes, absolutely, your daughter can benefit hugely from doing psychotherapy in addition to taking medication. It's in therapy that she'll learn many coping skills to make her life more manageable. Please interview several therapists until you find one that she has a good rapport with--it's best if your daughter talks to the therapist before making the first appt. Good luck to you!
