Internist Questions Antibiotics

Do antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control?

I'm on birth control, but I was on antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection about a month ago. Now it's time for my period, but I'm a couple of days late and I'm really worried. I haven't been having unprotected sex (unless something was wrong with the condom), but I feel like my period shouldn't be late when it's pretty regular--for the most part. Is this because of my antibiotics?

Antibiotics can make birth control less effective, so please use a back up method for the remainder of a pill pack if antibiotics are used. If you are concerned about a late period, take a pregnancy test to be on the safe side.
