Pediatrician Questions Constipation

Does excess iron intake cause constipation in children?

My daughter's hemoglobin levels are on the lower side. For the last 3 days we have been giving her iron supplements as well as a lot of iron rich foods. Could this lead to constipation in my daughter?

Iron supplements can cause dark stools and some constipation but just add colace. The benefits of a normal hemoglobin with better learning and improved exercise tolerance outweigh the side effect of constipation.
Iron medication for anemia should not "exceed" the recommended dose. This will not cause constipation.
