Try to sleep on your side, whichever one is more comfortable. Some people like a pillow between their bent knees
Try sleeping on your side with your legs curled up.

Most often, laying flat does help most back pain caused by arthritis or spondylosis by taking the pressure off of the nerves and discs. There should not be any difference between laying flat on your back, front, or sides.
Sleeping position does not affect your back pain. People usually change their positions during sleeping spontaneously. You should avoid sitting for a long period of time (no more than 15 or 20 minutes).
In general you should sleep on your back and on flat, comfortable but firm surface. However depending on part of back involved, upper, middle or lower this may change. Also whether the disk, arthritis or soft tissue involvement may change this. I would suggest back first and then experiment with sides. Flat on stomach is generally worse choice. Good luck.
There are no hats and fast rules for how to sleep with back pain. Depending on where the pain comes from the spine you might feel better with your back bent ( fetal position) or extended. The quick and easy way is to let the pain guide you. Your mattress should not be too hard or too soft but again see what feels more comfortable
